Visa-free entry to China

Until December 31, 2026, Austrian citizens and nationals of many other nations can enter China visa-free.
This regulation applies to holders of a valid ordinary passport if their stay serves the following purposes:

  • Business activities

  • Tourism trips to China

  • Visits with family or friends

  • Transit stays

Important: The stay may not exceed 30 days (day of entry and departure are counted).

The visa requirement for China remains in place for longer stays or other travel purposes (e.g. study, work).
Holders of a service passport also still require a visa (exception: Malaysia)

Applicants in the following categories are currently exempt from the fingerprint requirement if they apply for a single or double entry visa:

  • Business visa (M)

  • Tourist visa (L)

  • CREW visa (C)

  • Family visit for a short time (Q2)

  • Transit visa (G)

Fingerprinting requirement for multiple entries

For all other visa categories or visas with multiple entries, applicants must personally submit their fingerprints to the China Visa Application Service Center Vienna - unless they have already been registered with the same passport in the last 5 years.
To apply for a multiple-entry visa, previous China visas with entry & exit stamps are required.
The final decision on frequency of entry and duration of stay is made by the Chinese consulate.
