Visa-free entry to China

Until December 31, 2026, Austrian citizens and nationals of many other nations can enter China visa-free.
This regulation applies to holders of a valid ordinary passport if their stay serves the following purposes:

  • Business activities

  • Tourism trips to China

  • Visits with family or friends

  • Transit stays

Important: The stay may not exceed 30 days (day of entry and departure are counted).

The visa requirement for China remains in place for longer stays or other travel purposes (e.g. study, work).
Holders of a service passport also still require a visa (exception: Malaysia)

The China visa is issued in Austria by the Chinese Embassy in Vienna.
Applicants of all categories are currently exempt from the fingerprint requirement, regardless of whether they are single, double or multiple entries. Only the following visa categories must still appear in person at the consular provider to provide fingerprints:

  • Family members or relatives of Chinese nationals or foreigners permanently residing in China (more than 180 days) Q1
  • Work visa with employment in China
  • Visa for long-term study (more than 180 days) X1
  • Family members of foreigners staying or residing in China or persons who need to come to China for personal reasons (more than 180 days) S1
  • China-based foreign journalist of a foreign news agency with permanent establishment J1
  • Permanent resident D

New online visa application for China - step-by-step guide

Since the introduction of the new digital visa application, all documents must be uploaded as soon as they are filled in.
After verification by the Chinese Embassy Vienna, an email confirmation will be sent.
Only then may the documents be submitted to the China consular provider.

Applying for a China visa via the ÖVKG

1. have the visa application prepared by the ÖVKG

If you have the application prepared by the Austrian Visa and Consular Company (ÖVKG), you benefit from:

  • Pre-check of all documents

  • Creation & dispatch of the China visa application

  • Submission to the consulate

  • Collection & return shipment of the passport

After approval by the embassy, the ÖVKG will submit everything for you - quickly, safely and reliably.

2. fill out the visa application yourself

Alternatively, you can fill out the application yourself on the website of the Chinese Embassy in Vienna.
Please note:

  • Documents must be uploaded independently

  • Review takes 2-3 working days

  • Only after a positive decision may the originals be submitted

In this case, the ÖVKG can only check your documents for completeness, not for content.

New: China Arrival Card (from 20.11.2025)

As of 20.11.2025, all travelers must apply for an arrival card/e-arrival card every time they enter China.

Important: Registration can take place at the earliest 3 months before entry.

The ÖVKG takes care of the complete registration and application for the China Arrival Card for you, so that you can enter the country stress-free.

How to apply for/book your China visa

First steps:

1)Register: Register once with your e-mail address at https://oevkg.at/de/clients/new and confirm ÖVKG registration e-mail.

2) Log in: Click on the URL www.oevkg.at and log in with your e-mail address and password.

If you already have a customer number with ÖVKG (e.g. corporate customers or travel agencies), please enter this in the "Customer number" field.
