If you want to use an Austrian document abroad, you often need authentication or legalization to confirm the authenticity of the document.
1. legalization
The diplomatic legalization confirms the legal validity and authenticity of Austrian documents so that they are recognized abroad.
Legalization is completed by the consulate of the country in which the document is to be used.
In many cases, the apostille is sufficient instead of legalization.
It serves as a simplified form of certification in legal transactions between the contracting states of the Hague Convention No. 12 and replaces traditional legalization.
Frequently legalized documents
Certifications or legalizations are carried out for the following documents, among others:
Birth certificate
Excerpt from criminal record
Diploma or certificate
Marriage certificate
Trade documents (certificate of origin, invoice)

Medical documentation
Passport
Tax return or tax office statement

Starting work abroad: Foreign authorities often require a legalized excerpt from the criminal record or a diploma/certificate.
